Protection (page 1)
Passive protection is a must in the ‘War
against Global Terrorism’. The ‘New World Order’
heralded so graphically and tragically on September 11th 2001,
has highlighted the extreme need for vigilance and security in
all aspects of society. It is abundantly clear that all military,
government, and other strategically sensitive buildings in particular
need to be passively reinforced to counteract the affects of the
terrorist.
The dangers, in today’s world, more than
ever before, are from within. The cosmopolitan nature of our world
means a greater mix of ideologies and diverse sympathies in our
modern urban societies. The defence and protection of society
from the asymmetrical warfare of the terrorist is a matter of
the gravest concern for all military professionals, however it
is vital that the money dedicated to passive defence is spent
in the most appropriate way
The sensationalist press and certain pol iticians would have us
believe that the greatest terrorist threat is from the dirty bomb,
or from chemical, or biological weapons. And whilst it is undoubtedly
true that certain terrorist groups have access to the technology
to produce these weapons, and whilst it is also true that these
new threats are particularly ugly, they are much less likely scenarios
than those posed by conventional bombs.
