Exhibiting at Counter Terror Expo 2012 was an extremely worthwhile experience for Pensher Skytech, generating significant interest in the products we have to offer, and we will be exhibiting again next year.

This project was extremely complex and involved Pensher Skytech designing a robust system without compromising the highly aesthetic internal finishes present within this building in the heart of London’s business district.

The Pensher Skytech Protectex door incorporates advanced blast and ballistic resistant technology to resist the impact of a bomb blast or ballistic attack.  We will be displaying our Protectex door within the Access Control Suite at Counter Terror Expo 2012. 

CONTEST, the UK’s counter terror strategy is centred upon four principle initiatives: pursue, protect, prevent and prepare. The ‘prepare’ principal is focused upon improving preparedness for high impact risks. Where a terrorist attack cannot be prevented, the impact of the attack can be mitigated if the correct preparatory measures are in place.  The government commissioned a review of the UK’s preparedness for terrorist attacks and the findings identified the requirement for building design to incorporate counter terrorism protective security. 

Consequently, architects and engineers are facing new challenges to create original, attractive design while implementing counter terrorism measures. The requirement for public buildings to be structurally secure in the event of a terrorist attack is imperative to protect the public. However, this must be achieved without sacrificing design innovation.   

The use of glass facades in public buildings is a popular choice for architects because it creates light and a sense of openness.  However, up to 95% of all injuries resulting from bomb blast are caused by flying or falling glass. Matthew Butchard, technical director of Pensher Skytech, explains “once an explosive device is detonated, a pressure wave is produced which can propagate for great distances affecting not only the targeted building but the entire surrounding area.  As a result, glass facades of neighbouring buildings shatter and the projected glass fragments cause the public serious injury.”

Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB) has developed guidance notes on the use of glazing enhancements to reduce potential hazards. HOSDB recommend the use of blast resistant glazing in conjunction with enhanced frames. The purpose of blast resistant glazing is to hold the glass in one piece and retain it within the frame thus preventing flying debris.   Butchard advises, “It is critical to assess building design and upgrades holistically to provide a complete solution.  Once an explosion is detonated, if blast resistant glass is fitted into a non-enhanced frame, the glass will remain intact but become a projectile due to the frame being unable to hold the glass under blast pressures.” 

 “The development of blast resistant technology should not prohibit building design but enable architects and engineers to work together to create a public space that is both aesthetically pleasing and prepared for a terrorist attack.”
